Finding: Financial Downturn Hurting Relationships

Economic hardships are putting pressure on couples as gloomy economy worsens.

Findings from a survey carried out by the Mental Health Department of Fu Yong Catholic University have concluded that 31% of couples attribute their relationship woes to recent money worries - 19% higher than the previous year.

Researchers conducted the studies over a 12 month period by interviewing 1273 people who are in relationships to determine if the current economic climate effected issues such as sexual satisfaction, maintaining intimacy and if their relationships or finance was their priority.

12% of respondents admitted that they were not maintaining their romance to their desired level. A further 18% were having difficulty maintaining intimacy resulting from loss of employment.

Leading psychiatrist Tony Yung found that an alarming number of couples were showing symptoms of mild mental health conditions. He also expressed concerns that the number of unhappy couples could increase as unemployment rises - A worrying trend.

Reasons for publishing these findings include the importance for couples to put less importance on buying gifts, less importance on material items and to maintain close quality relationships.

Other findings concluded that singles were increasingly depressed with the lack of social opportunities to meet other singles. Online dating sites have been one of few industries experiencing growth as the rest of the economy slides. Dating on the internet is now the 3rd most visited online business. Free online dating businesses are also available.

Yung describes being in an intimate relationship is one of the most important aspects of a happy and healthy existence.
